The copy machine of today is different than the duplicator of long ago. Before Thomas Edison pioneered the light or the phonograph, he patented the mimeograph in 1876. The process involved cutting a stencil with an electrical pen, and pushing the ink thru the holes onto paper. The subsequent year, inventor Albert Blake Dick made a Flatbed Duplicator using this technique, which sold for $12. The A.B. Dick mimeograph was the standard for decades, employed in businesses and colleges, and even to copy U.S. Army orders in WW2. Future models replaced the flatbed with a cylinder that could revolve with a crank, an ink reservoir with automated feed, and an electrical motor for giant quantity copies. The early 1900s brought the discovery of the ditto machine, whereby one sheet and special paper may be written on or typed, and a second sheet was laid against it which was covered with coloured wax. It was then run through a drum machine, and could create up to 5 hundred copies. Although easy to use, the method was expensive thanks to the special supplies required, and the dittoes would steadily fade over a time period when exposed to light. In 1937, Chester Carlson invented the electrophotography, or Xerography process. It took several years to locate a company to supply a functioning commercial push button photocopier. In 1958, Haloid Xerox, who later shortened the company name to Xerox, introduced their first copy machine. Other companies were quick to jump into the market. Although we haven’t heard about Ricoh till recently, they were essentially creating their first copier as early as 1955. Other popular brands include Minolta, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp, Konica and Canon, who specialise in offering small enterprise solutions with local service. Today, you no longer even have to stand by a copier to insert the paper. An operator can be thousands of miles away and simply click a button on a P. C. , indoctrinating a copy machine to print beautiful high-spec colour prints.
